It’s like a bad dream and you hope that it is just that, but the Americans wake up every morning to acknowledge that it is so true and it is NOT a dream. The sad part is that the U.S. Congress allows it to happen.
At the beginning of his second term, Trump immediately starting imposing tariffs amongst most countries around the world. Congress is supposed to initiate tariffs, but Trump has decided that the rules of the country and the Constitution doesn’t matter. He destroyed the markets, people’s savings, meanwhile passing laws to enrich the wealthy and make the poor poorer. Two government shutdowns, farmers going bankrupt, and people losing their health insurance. With his free reign of immunity, Trump acts upon his whim, and doesn’t rule with prudence and measured action. One day he attacks Venezuela. Another day he says he wants to take over Greenland. He decided to do that after he confronted Canada, saying that Canada needs to be the 51st state. He takes it upon himself to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America. On another day Trump levels the White House East Wing. Again, Congress is supposed to approve actions such as this, but Trump decided to not ask or inform, he just demolished the iconic East Wing. For what? He says that he wants to build a magnificent ballroom. Is there anyone in power today that can turn this disaster around? What is it going to take to get rid of Trump. With only the first year of his second term behind him, congressmen are already floating the idea of the 25th Amendment but one thing for sure is coming, and that would be another impeachment. It will be number 3 for the Donald.
In the meantime, many countries have had enough of Donald Trump. The European Union invites Canada to join the European Union. Canada starts trading with European customers, ignoring the United States.
A former Canadian member of Parliament Charlie Angus pulls no punches when it comes to Donald Trump. In a most recent speech of Charlie Angus, he states that Canada can no longer rely of international law, historical alliances, or the “whim” of U.S. leadership to guarantee its security. Angus argues that the erosion of the rule of law in Washington necessitates an “all-of-society” resistance strategy within Canada. He calls for the mobilization of volunteer citizens’ force and a shift toward local resilience to safeguard the nation’s 9.000-kilometer border and democratic values.
Angus proposes a framework for Canadian citizens to protect national integrity, modeled after the Danish resistance during WWII.
The following are the Ten Commandments of Resistance for Canada…
1. Defend Sovereignty: A commitment to protect Canada’s territorial and democratic integrity.
2. Disaster Response: active participation in managing national disasters, fires, or border threats.
3. Skill Upgrading: Training in first aid, emergency preparedness, and community support.
4. Grassroots Action: Consistent participation in voting and democratic resistance.
5. Inclusion: Upholding Indigenous rights and resisting discrimination based on sex, race, or religion.
6. Economic Boycott: Boycotting U.S. goods in favor of local food sovereignty.
7. Information Defense: Acting as a blocker of disinformation and hate speech.
8. Local Solidarity: Forming small local resistance groups to recruit and support others.
9. Non-Cooperation: Refusing to cooperate with institutional or corporate “tyranny” or the rolling back of rights.
10. Active Disruption: Engaging in mass civil disobedience if territorial integrity is breached internally or externally.
What about Nuance and Friction?
First, there is Institutional Failure: As Angus stated, a “collective failure” of the media, courts, and business classes in the U.S. to constrain authoritarian behavior, suggesting these institutions are now complicit.
Second, there is a “King Charles” Factor: Angus mocks the idea that Canadian safety depends on personal rapport between leaders (e.g., Trump’s alleged affinity for the King) rather than legal frameworks.
Third, concerning Internal Readiness, there is a noted friction regarding the Canadian government’s reported plans for a 300,000-person volunteer force. Angus questions why these plans have not been made public despite high citizen interest.
Fourth, there is a geopolitical shift. Canada is likened to Finland or the Baltic states-nations historically forced into high-alert resistance do to the proximity to a menacing neighbor.
